Following several late-night meetings and pressure from President Trump, Speaker Johnson (R-LA-04) successfully passes the reconciliation package in the House. In a 215-214 vote, House Republicans passed the “one big, beautiful bill” they had been negotiating for weeks. A 42-page amendment released only hours before the final vote revealed additional compromises reached among holdouts in the Republican party to secure passage. (Read Roll Call and amendment language)
The bill includes several key changes to the Medicaid program that are now headed to the Senate for consideration. Key proposals include:
Faster implementation of work requirements for Medicaid eligibility
An expanded ban on gender-affirming care—extending restrictions from minors to all Medicaid recipients
Higher payments for uncompensated care, designed to incentivize states not to expand Medicaid
In addition, the bill proposes to:
Ban new or increased state provider taxes
Tighten eligibility and income verification rules for individuals using health insurance exchanges.
